What’s New for ’12

The e-Assist system builds on the previous generation integrated starter/alternator mild hybrid technology, adding a 115-volt lithium-ion battery pack and 15 Kilowatt (20-hp) drive motor.

Instead of just starting and stopping the engine, the alternator-motor also provides additional power to the drivetrain. It also uses regenerative braking to charge the vehicle’s batteries. Fuel economy is bolstered by up to 25%, according to GM.

The motor-generator keeps the engine spinning for a smooth re-start when the throttle is applied.

The system is standard on all 2012 LaCrosse models equipped with the 2.4L 4-cyl. engine.

Under-body aerodynamic enhancements and an active shutter in the lower grille also contribute to efficiency gains.

The additional input from the motor-generator allows for higher transmission gearing and helps prevent downshifts under mild acceleration or while ascending mild grades.
